2008 Alabama Senior Games

ALABAMA

SENIOR

GAMES

The bi-annual Alabama State Games for cycling was held April 5th & 6th. On April 5th the 40K road race was held in the community of Cecil, Al. The conditions were wet and overcast which provided the motivation for the Cycle Escape Team to play it safe and stay home...so much for amateur cyclist who depend on another job for their livelihood. On April 6th the conditions were made to order for the 5K ITT, 10K ITT, and the 20 circuit road race. Team Cycle Escape was represented by Mike Munk, Karen Bauer, and Carl Viars

All three participated in the 5k ITT, with Mike Munk taking the Gold Medal in the 60-64 age group and hammering down the best time of all participants. Karen took a Silver Medal and Carl took a Bronze Medal in their respective classes. Carl Viars was the team solo participant in the 10K and 20K events, taking a Silver Medal in both events.

In the post analysis I would offer that fun was enjoyed by all that participated. Phil Jones and a crew of volunteers ran a well organized series of races. A number of out of towner's', along with many from other southern states participated as well. I enjoyed meeting and competing with the assembled group of cyclist. The ITTs caused the most pain and agony...hey, time trials are supposed to hurt! I didn't set any personal bests or anything. Now the 20K circuit road race was fun...I tried and tried to whip things in to a frenzy when possible. In retrospect I would have to say any day cycling is a much better day because of it. Carl Viars
