GA SS Championship March 19, 2006

Sunday was the Ga. Single Speed mountain bike State Championship race. As most of you know, I love riding my SS MTB. Usually, anyway. This course just outside of Athens Ga. was BRUTAL! The climbs were long and steep and so were the downhills. I blew up completely midway through the first lap and went into survival mode for a while. I ended up 27 out of 40 or so finishers in the sport class. There were no age groups so I take some consolation in the fact that I was racing against all those young punks! Oh well, this wasn't a high priority race and it was still a blast.
The next race is April 2 in Macon. I'll have gears this time and I'll only have the other old guys to contend with. It should be much fun!

Jeff D, David B, and Byron S. Started with the Time Trail.

Jeff D. rode in the Master Open in the RR and finished the 52 mile race in 2:06 minutes with better than 24 mph avg in the main pack. Very respectable finish.

Todd Hanning had a blow-out in the first 5 miles and didn't have a spare wheel.

David B., Byron S., and Carl V. rode in the combined CAT 4 and 5 race. It started off really fast...dropping all in the first lap, David B. hung in there and completed the 52 mile race.

Pictured is Jeff D. after the finish.

Albany GA, Maxxis-GA CUP Series Race Report from Colin A.

Albany GA, Maxxis-GA CUP Series Race Report from Colin A. Well, I am still in one piece physically. But mentally I am shattered. Maxxis cup was FAST. Out of 45 riders I finished 23rd overall for the weekend. But, I was just hanging on all the time. There was a crash in the crit that split the field. I was in it but didn't go down. Blew a tire though with 4 to go and couldn't get back on. TT was in the pouring rain. Best thing about it was that I kept the rubber side down. The RR was as fast as anything I have been in 20 years. We did 56 miles in 1hr and 51minutes. That's a 29 mph average!! Mr. Johnson our district rep. says that the 35+ class is the second fasted group in the region. Only bested by the pro 1,2 category.
